Concept:
This release was created while considering the way in which our perceptions of individual experiences are impacted or changed based on the context in which they are experienced. A piece of music, a video, a word, a colour, or a sound or noise may carry different meaning based on what else we see and hear or think about at the time.
Guiding principle:
The guiding principle is to roll a die 6 times, once for each category, to randomly select one element from each of those categories. Then play all 6 elements at the same time to produce a chance 6 minute piece.
Or ignore the guiding principle:
Variations may naturally be explored at will, to engage with individual elements, or fewer than 6 of the elements at a time (one each from two categories, or three, and so on). Heck, choose more than one at a time from the same category if you like, or overlap them at different intervals. The guiding principle above is guidance only.
Give the elements your own spontaneous or intentional context if you wish, outside of those provided here. Regardless, what we are doing before, during, and after we listen to, watch, or otherwise consume anything, along with our own broader life experiences, provide their own context to those things. So two people could engage with the same 6 or fewer elements and will likely interpret them differently anyway.
Really, once anyone puts any kind of work out there it is for the public to engage with it as they please, so it’s up to you. We all have free will. Don’t be told what to do or how to watch, listen to, or otherwise consume things. Choose. The creation of any art belongs to the artist/s, but the consumption of it belongs to everyone.
At this time I plan never to perform any of the composed audio pieces or use any of the other audio or video elements of ‘context’ in a live setting. This is to avoid my giving any other contextual presentation of the material other than how it is provided in this release.
